When I read Lisa's challenge for today I was a bit apprehensive. I had to sit with it for a few days to really figure out what to do with it and how I would interpret it. Her lettering work is so beautiful and unique that I felt a little intimidated when I saw the examples. Then yesterday, I saw this quote come across my screen TWICE -- once on Instagram and a second time on Pinterest: So I was gently reminded to bring the joy back into the process and I LOVE what resulted. TODAY'S CHALLENGE -- from Lisa DeYoungHere's the challenge Lisa gave me: create a page that uses lettering, writing & color to create the visual. She even provided me with a few examples of what she meant. Here they are: After sitting with the challenge and reclaiming my joy for the process, I realized that I'm a journaler, have been all of my life, words are my thing, so I should go there. Start from a place of what's familiar and see what happens. Here's my image... I used masking fluid, watercolors, and a Sakura Gelly Roll pen. Easy peasy. And Lisa made one more image specific for this blog hop. Here is her image and you can read her blog post by CLICKING HERE. Make sure to check out all the teachers in the blog hop.

If you have been following along with the blog hop, you know I usually have a little intro for you and sometimes a story, but today I want to jump right to the challenge because it's a really cool idea and it kinda comes with it's own story. Here goes... TODAY'S CHALLENGE -- from Nicole PiarNicole Piar (aka GhostKitten) said this about today's challenge: I love to use serendipity and intuition when making art so I closed my eyes, tuned in, and picked a card from my Spirit Cats Inspirational Deck just for you. You got the "Warrior" card (see pic of the card and the meaning below). Use this card as a catalyst for some inner exploration and see what art comes forth from this place. I also challenge you to use a color palette that you don't normally use. It is so interesting to step outside our habits and stretch our color wings. Nicole’s post can be found HERE. Here's the Spirit Cat card that Nicole pulled for me: Here's what showed up for me after I spent some time thinking about what it means to be a warrior. Nicole has combined two great colors -- that I don't think I would have put together, so I went with those. I love the unexpected combination of warrior and softer colors. AND, unlike me, I left a lot of white space on the page. I also wanted to mimic at least one element of the card, so I went with the flowers. Make sure to check out all the teachers in the blog hop.

I saw snow for the first time as an adult on my honeymoon (2004) and didn't really experience a true winter until that time. You know, the kind of winter where you have to wear multiple layers, buy special shoes, and fireplaces are for more than just decoration. So for a really long time, I had romanticized winter and all that I thought it would be. And it was magical the first time I was in snow. I made a snow angel -- in fact. But I was at a ski resort and they were doing all the work for us. Shuttling us back and forth, salting the roads, shoveling the walkways, and keeping the fireplaces going. But if you live somewhere that has a TRUE WINTER, then you likely see it much differently than the visitors. Today's challenge was about me capturing my idea of winter in my art journal. TODAY'S CHALLENGE -- from Andrea GomollThe amazing Andrea Gomoll gave me this challenge: "Right now it's Winter - it's cold - it's grey ... especially during the darker season. We can use Art to add some color to our lives. Use THESE ART JOURNAL PAGES I made as inspiration for your own, colorful Art Journal Page to bring some color into your Day (and to your Art Journal). BUT (it would be too easy this way - right? :). The true challenge is to add a Winter Twist to the page somehow while still showing color. :)" Here's my interpretation: Make sure to check out all the teachers in the blog hop.

It was actually my sister who taught me how to write and I would get in trouble at school because I was holding the pencil incorrectly (according to my teachers). I was holding the pencil and angling the paper like a left-hander but I was using my right hand. It was quite something and it took me a long time to break out of it. My teacher even called my mother into the school to tell her I had to stop writing that way. So when Amanda Trought gave me the challenge to create a page using only my non-dominant hand, I was both excited and nervous. I haven't really used my left hand much over the years (other than for typing and texting :-) But this was rather amazing. I LOVED how free it felt to just let go. To start a page knowing it would not be perfect because you simply can't create a perfect page using your non-dominant hand if that's not something you practice. Hmmmm...practice...now that's a novel idea. TODAY'S CHALLENGE -- from Amanda TroughtCreate a page using your non-dominant hand. Here's what I created. And I really love it. Make sure to check out all the teachers in the blog hop.
