Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a creativity coach?
Of course I think everyone could use a creativity coach once in a while, but certainly if you are in a profession that drains your creative energy, you may benefit from working with a coach. If you are someone who works creatively everyday, but you're feeling a little run down (which is typical and happens more often than you might think), you may benefit from working with a coach. If you have a ton of creative ideas, but you can't seem to follow through on any projects or goals, you may benefit from working with a coach. If you don't consider yourself creative, you may benefit from working with a coach. If you simply want to explore your creative side in a safe space, you may benefit from working with a coach. Basically, I stand on the belief that everyone could use a creativity coach at some point!

What can a creativity coach do for me?
I speak only for my services when I say that I can help you reconnect (or connect) to your creative self, help you set and reach short and long term creative goals, challenge you to use this space and time to take creative risks, and when needed, help you find the thing that makes you come alive.

What can I expect a session to include?
Conversation, inspiration, imagination, creation, sometimes perspiration, and always celebration!

Can I get a free session?
Yes. I give each potential client a complimentary 30-minute session. This can be done in person if you live in the Oakland/San Fransisco Bay Area, or through a virtual means like Skype, FaceTime, or Google Hangout. I also provide a 30-minute phone option.

What if I can't afford a creativity coach?
Start with the complimentary 30-min consultation and let's talk about what your needs are and how I can best help you achieve them within your budget.

What if I live outside the San Francisco Bay Area?
We can schedule our meetings via Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangout or telephone. I'm quite flexible in an effort to accommodate my long distance clients.

How long does coaching take?
The way I approach creativity coaching is two-fold. After our initial conversation, I suggest a coaching plan based on what we've discussed. I highly encourage each client to start with no fewer than 60 days. After your first 60 days, we reevaluate your goals and talk about what will work best for you and your progress/process. If after our first conversation, we agree that you need more than 60 days, we plan for up to as many as 6 months, with a reevaluation at the 2 month and 4 month benchmark. If after 6 months, we agree that you need/want additional coaching, we take a 2 week reflection period and begin again on a month-to-month basis. The goal of coaching is to help you find the strength, courage, and creative wherewithal to continue on your own. Each person is different and will have different needs. I've worked with clients for as few as 10 weeks and for as long as 3 years. Individualized coaching is the cornerstone of my practice.

How can you help a teacher become more creative?
As a 17 year teaching veteran, I've had my share of creative lulls. I love working with teachers who want to keep teaching, but are finding it difficult to inspire their students because they themselves aren't feeling very inspired. I help teachers reconnect to what brought them to teaching, what keeps them teaching, and what can move their teaching forward. Creative teachers are the lifeline of our communities and schools, so keeping them feeling alive and refreshed is one of my favorite parts of being a creativity coach. I work with teachers on everything from individual lesson plans to full year curriculum plans. Most of the teachers I've worked with come to me because they want to reignite their love for teaching or they are first year teachers and they need help figuring out how to manage and balance. We also work on career planning for those hoping to eventually become administrators. My work with teachers spans 17 years and no two teachers have ever needed or wanted the same exact thing. It keeps me on my toes!

What kinds of manuscripts will you review?
I typically review poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction manuscripts, but I have also had clients with self-help books, technical documents and booklets, and print advertising. I'm eager to take on new challenges, but if your project feels outside my areas of expertise, I will gladly recommend another qualified colleague.

What do you do with/to my manuscript?

What if I don't have a project yet?
No project? No problem! Let's start by tilling the soil, planting some seeds and seeing what grows. Creativity can come in quick spurts of inspiration or can be cultivated over time. Ultimately you must take a first step. If you're reading this, consider this your first step!

Do you only work with fiction writers?
No. I work with writers from all background--poets, memoirists, business writers, and lawyers. I also work with people who do not consider themselves to be writers, like parents, artists, students, and teachers.

Can you help me find an agent or publisher for my finished manuscript?
While I do not offer a service that pairs writers and agents/publishers, I do provide support towards that goal. The search for an agent/publisher is one that can look different for each writer. Your success story is one you're writing right now by considering working with me. When you're ready to have this discussion, contact me.

What if I want to self-publish?
I treat my self-publishing clients with the same attention and dedication that I give my clients who are seeking publication through traditional avenues. I don't make a distinction because in the end, the work you produce is all that matters and I strive to help you bring your words to your readers in a thoughtful, creative, and authentic way.

How much do you charge?
My standard rates are listed here, however, I'm a working writer, artist, and teacher and I understand what its like when you are just starting out or reaffirming your commitment to your craft--sometimes money is "tight". So, don't let my standard rates deter you. Start with the complementary consultation and let's go from there. In the end, I guarantee the investment in your creative future will be well worth it.

I've completed my project, now what?
Give me a call and let's make a plan for your next steps. I provide coaching on post-manuscript options, whether you are seeking publication or simple personal satisfaction that your manuscript has been professionally edited and reviewed. I can also work with you on creating your author platform if you are ready to take that leap.
