Art Journaling Your Heritage

Today's challenge is a GOOOOOD one, so let's jump right to it.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE -- from Sadelle Wiltshire

PictureSadelle Wilthsire
Cultural Heritage / Language
  • Create a page inspired by a foreign language or your cultural heritage.
  • Use words, fonts/letters, poetry, newspapers, art inspiration from the language or culture as collaged bits and/or painted/stamped layers.
  • Add some Zentangle inspired art or pen art to highlight a section or shapes.
NOTE: You can visit Sadelle's blog for some examples of this in action -- and to enter her giveaway!!
After reading the challenge I knew exactly where I wanted to start. In 2013 during Book-in-a-Day, I carved a set of stamps based on the African symbols called Adrinka. CLICK HERE to read about it.

So I went to my stamps and started there. Then I added a bit of inked Zentangles inside the open spaces. That was fun.

I kept looking at the page wondering what was happening with it and where it was going. I realized that it needed something dimensional, so I grabbed some Kentè cloth that I've been holding on to since my wedding (almost 11 years) and cut two strips from that. It was just what the page needed.

Here's my page:

Kiala Givehand art journal page with kente cloth
The page has a lot of layers (like heritage) and a lot of texture (like culture) and it's just about darn perfect. I think I'll snip that piece at the top and edge the page with some black ink.

Here are a few close ups:

Omigosh, Kiala.... that is STUNNING! Even more so now that I know you used your Adrinka stamps AND a piece of Kente cloth! When I went to the national weaver's conference 20 years ago, there was a fellow who was teaching and demoing the weaving of Kente cloth. The layers of culture and heritage in your page make my heart all aflutter!
