Book-in-a-Day 2014 -- A Monthly Bookmaking Journey

The first book of 2014 was super easy and encompassed many of the things I came to love as I created 52 books in 2013.

  • Folded structures make me happy.
  • I love Liqutex Acrcylic Paints on paper -- makes it feel leather-like.
  • I adore my spiral art kits (aka hypochotroid) (aka spirograph) and should use them more often.
  • Simple clean lines make me happy.
This book starts the year of 12 books by featuring my one little word -- BREATHE.

This is the 2nd book for 2014 -- a flexagon. It was inspired by Lyall Harris and the book Make Map Art by Nate Padavick & Salli Swinddle.

I love the "magic" of this book. Do you remember the circle flexagon I made in 2013 for book 14? Yep, it's the same kind of magic!!

Book number 3 was a first for me. I saw a version of this book at last year's CODEX event and was fascinated by how the book artist (who I can't remember) used strings to create a wispy effect on the spine. She had several versions of this structure (which Alisa Golden calls the tied binding) and one of them used the strings to wrap around the spine and create a beautiful pattern.

My version is rather simple and uses recycled pieces of painted papers and scrap paper used when working on other projects.

I'm really loving the blank books and the possibilities of each one.

This is a structure I saw demonstrated by an elementary school teacher back in 2001. I'm not sure I did it the exact say way she did, but I got really close. The one thing I know that was different is that I used a pamphlet stitch binding. If I remember correctly, she had the kids use a single hole puncher and make two holes in the spine then use rope to tie it together. Both ways work, but I  like mine better because I got to add a few beads.
