Welcome Midlife Writers,

If you are new here, welcome.
If you've joined me for other writing workshops, welcome back. I'm excited that you're thinking of joining us for this new writing workshop experience. This one is different than any other I've hosted so far. You're stepping into something special and new.  And whether you're a new writer or a seasoned pro, please take a moment to review this info and get a feel for what this workshop is all about and how to be a part of it.

What is Midlife Memoir?

This is an intimate, intense, interactive, and intuitive writing circle for women who want to dive deep and move from daily journaling to writing personal narrative and telling their personal stories. This circle is a space for our voices, our stories, and our words. It's not a space focused on publication, although several of our writers have gone on to publish poems, prose, articles, and books.

This is a guided experience that asks you to write on your own between our live calls. You'll need to commit to at least one consecutive hour of writing on your own each week to benefit from this writing circle.

Our theme for this year's cycle is TBA.

Each year I select a theme by sitting with my own writing over the year, pulling tarot & oracle cards, and listening in to what the Universe is guiding me to bring forward. I will announce the theme around the start of October.

Last year's theme was HOME and it allowed us to discuss the ways in which we find comfort, identity, and belonging within ourselves, explore the inner sanctuary we build for peace and healing, reflect on the memories and experiences that shape our sense of self, and embark on a journey of personal discovery, wholeness, and transformation. Through writing and discussion, we were able to dive into the metaphorical aspects of home as a place of safety, growth, and connection, ultimately coming home to who we truly are.

Who is it for?

This circle is for you if you can say YES to any of the following statements:
  • Have you been writing in a diary or journal for decades and you're now feeling ready to venture beyond journaling?
  • Do you have one or two unfinished manuscripts in your desk drawer or bedside table?
  • Are you a natural storyteller who loves to share through the oral tradition of sitting around and swapping stories?
  • Does poetry flow from your soul fully formed and ready to share?
  • Have you reached the age where you have more soul-filled stories tied to precious memories than you can count?
  • Do you only have time to write a little each day and you need motivation to do it?
  • Are you a beginning writer looking for a safe and supportive space to learn, experiment, and be curious about writing?
  • Do you love writing prompts and exercises to get you going?
  • Is this the year you start and complete your novel?

If you've answered yes to any of these, then this is the writing circle for you.

This immersive experience is designed for women seeking to harness the introspective power of the winter season, using our chosen theme as a guiding light. Over the course of several weeks, we will play with poetry and prose, experiment with various techniques, and write, write, write.

Details About the Writing Circle

Picture
I like to keep the writing circles intimate so this circle will have a limited number of seats. I'm only running one Writing Into Winter circle this year.
Picture
The "engine" in this writing circle is the variety of prompts given to help you practice the craft of writing. This year we have a plethora of prompts.
Picture
Being able to hear the stories of other writers is a powerful part of this process. The private online group allows for sharing between sessions.

Whether you are new to writing circles or a seasoned pro, having weekly examples can prove helpful to your writing and to build your confidence.
Picture
Each session will include invitations designed to encourage you to go beyond the writing and bring in other creative modalities to help expand your craft.

Writing Into Winter is a thematically focused writing circle and thus will include exercises for deepening your craft and your relationship with the theme.

Why Join This Circle?

Ultimately, Writing Into Winter offers an empowering experience that can enhance your writing skills, boost your confidence to write more and write often, encourage you to increase your self-reflection practice, and deepen your understanding of the many facets of our theme (TBA) in order to embrace it within your life and your other creative endeavors.

Personal Narrative

We will write stories that reflect our unique lived experiences, perspectives, and emotional journeys. By sharing our memories, reflections, significant events, challenges, and shaping moments we practice our storytelling skills and give our most authentic voice the opportunity to be heard.

A personal narrative can take various forms (ie, poetry or prose) and can encompass a wide range of themes. Writing personal narrative allows us to express ourselves and provides a platform for connecting to others with a similar history.

Celebrate A Variety of Voices

I take great care to emphasize and celebrate diverse voices and experiences in the course. Some of the ways I do this are by showcasing student narratives, sharing writing from people with culturally expansive backgrounds, and by including content that adds depth and richness to the collective storytelling experience.

Nurturing Community

All writers need a stress-free, supportive, and nurturing community of fellow writers who can provide a safe space to share stories, exchange feedback, and foster meaningful connections. This is one such space. I make it a point to give each writer space and time to be heard and celebrated as a human and as a writer (no matter the phase of your writing journey).

Theme Exploration

The theme will invite you to embark on a journey through storytelling, reflecting, and reconnecting. Over the course of our sessions, we’ll explore our theme from a variety of angles and through a diverse set of lenses. The theme isn't just about writing—it's about reflecting on who we are at our core, understanding the emotional and psychological ways our writing shapes us and creates us. We get intentionally lost in our writing in an effort to discover how we can go deeper within ourselves. As we explore the yearly theme, we also touch on sub-themes that connect to the main theme we are exploring. We will do this in service of exploring this theme from different perspectives knowing that ultimately, our perspective is the only one we can authentically convey in writing.

Building Confidence & Resilience

The process of crafting personal narratives can build confidence and resilience while empowering us to embrace our stories with pride and courage, regardless of the challenges we may or may not have faced. Resilience can help us break free from the feeling that life is happening to us instead of for us. Through writing and sharing our stories and remembering the life we've lived, we can recognize that challenging situations and consequences are a part of the human journey and we have the ability to respond in ways that have the potential to positively impact our lives. Resilience is like having a superpower that helps us bounce back from tough times and challenges in life. It's all about learning from our experiences, and finding the inner strength to keep moving forward, no matter what life throws at us. By cultivating resilience through our writing, we can gradually shift our perspective and develop a sense of control over our reactions (and responses) when navigating life's challenges. Through the writing process we get to do this with greater determination and more hope.
